Its WordPress.org listing promises, for free: unlimited image optimization for images of any size, a local optimization mode compatible with most web hosts, lossless JPG, PNG, GIF and SVG optimization (it quotes an average saving of 8% for lossless), and WebP conversion. If your server can’t run the local tools, EWWW offers free lossless JPG optimization and WebP conversion through its Compress API instead.

Paid upgrades add stronger (“premium”) compression, PDF optimization, automatic scaling, one-click WebP and AVIF delivery, and the Easy IO CDN, which compresses, resizes, lazy-loads and converts images on the fly. EWWW also advertises free one-on-one email support for everyone, including free users.

What ImageSEO does

ImageSEO uses AI to describe images: it writes alt text, titles and captions and renames files to descriptive names, both on upload and in bulk. It also creates Open Graph social cards. It doesn’t change image files’ weight or format — that’s EWWW’s job.

Local vs cloud: where your images are processed

This is the most practical difference between the two, and it’s worth being clear about.

• EWWW in local mode optimizes images with tools running on your own web server. Nothing has to be sent anywhere, which some organizations prefer for data-location or policy reasons. Its cloud options (Compress API, Easy IO) do send images to EWWW’s service.
• ImageSEO needs to analyze each image with an AI model to describe it. That analysis happens on ImageSEO’s servers, so images are processed outside your hosting. If your organization has rules about sending images to third parties, check them before enabling any AI alt text tool — this applies to every AI alt text service, not just ours.

Lossless compression is great for speed — it doesn’t describe anything

EWWW’s default lossless mode shaves bytes without changing a single pixel. That’s a safe, sensible default. But no amount of compression adds a description: an image optimized by EWWW keeps whatever alt text and file name it had — often none, and often something like IMG_0342.jpg.

Google’s documentation calls alt text “the most important attribute when it comes to providing more metadata for an image”.
