Structured Data for Product Images: ImageObject Schema Explained

By the ImageSEO Team. ~5 min read.

Structured data is the secret weapon of product image SEO. If you sell anything on a WordPress site, your product images should have either ImageObject or Product schema — or both. Here’s why, and how to do it right in 2026.

What structured data does for images

Schema.org markup is a machine-readable label on your HTML. When Google, Bing, or an AI engine reads a page with structured data, they don’t have to guess what the image is about — you’ve told them directly. For images specifically, structured data unlocks:

  • Shopping carousel eligibility in Google Images and Google Lens
  • Rich results with prices, ratings, availability
  • AI shopping citations (ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity)
  • Pinterest Rich Pins for product cards

ImageObject schema — the minimum

ImageObject is the schema.org type for a standalone image. Example:

{
  "@context": "https://schema.org",
  "@type": "ImageObject",
  "contentUrl": "https://example.com/red-leather-handbag.jpg",
  "name": "Red leather handbag, autumn 2026 collection",
  "description": "Red leather handbag with gold clasp, photographed on marble tabletop",
  "creator": {"@type": "Person", "name": "Jane Photographer"},
  "copyrightHolder": {"@type": "Organization", "name": "Example Store"},
  "license": "https://example.com/license"
}

Use ImageObject for editorial photography, blog hero images, and non-product images where attribution matters.

Product schema — the one you actually need for ecommerce

For WooCommerce product pages, Product schema is what you want. It includes the image as one of its properties:

{
  "@context": "https://schema.org",
  "@type": "Product",
  "name": "Red leather handbag — autumn 2026",
  "image": ["https://example.com/handbag-front.jpg", "https://example.com/handbag-side.jpg"],
  "description": "Structured red leather handbag with gold clasp",
  "sku": "HB-2026-RED",
  "offers": {
    "@type": "Offer",
    "price": "89",
    "priceCurrency": "EUR",
    "availability": "https://schema.org/InStock"
  }
}

How to add it to WordPress (without writing JSON-LD by hand)

Three options, ranked from least to most work:

  1. RankMath (free): generates Product schema automatically for WooCommerce products. Zero configuration for the basic case.
  2. Yoast SEO (free): similar, Product schema on WooCommerce pages.
  3. Custom code via WPCode: if you need fields RankMath doesn’t expose, you can inject custom JSON-LD via a WPCode snippet.

The secret: your image’s alt text becomes part of the schema signal

Google doesn’t only read structured data. It also reads the alt text on the image referenced in "image": "...". If the alt text matches the schema description, Google’s trust in the data goes up. If it’s blank, Google treats the schema as less reliable.

Practical takeaway: Product schema + empty alt text = penalty. Fix the alt text before adding the schema, or better, do both at once.

The 2026 product image SEO stack

  1. Semantic filename (e.g. red-leather-handbag-autumn.jpg)
  2. Natural-language alt text (“Red leather structured handbag with gold clasp, autumn 2026 boutique collection”)
  3. Product schema via RankMath, including the image URL
  4. ImageObject schema on editorial / blog hero images
  5. Image sitemap entry (RankMath handles automatically)

Items 1 and 2 are what ImageSEO for WooCommerce handles automatically. Items 3-5 are your RankMath configuration. Together, they’re the full picture.
