The ROI of Image SEO: What Real Sites See After 6 Months

By the ImageSEO Team. ~7 min read.

Every SEO tool promises ROI. Most don’t show receipts. This post shows the receipts — specifically what happened on WordPress sites that did a full image SEO overhaul over six months. No names (NDA), but real numbers.

Site 1: WooCommerce boutique (fashion, 850 SKUs)

Starting state: 850 product photos. 91% had empty alt text. Zero semantic filenames. 1,200 monthly Google Images impressions.

Intervention: bulk alt text rewrite via ImageSEO for WooCommerce, filename rewrite, ImageObject schema via RankMath.

MonthGoogle Images impressionsClicks
Baseline1,20034
Month 13,400112
Month 38,900298
Month 614,200491

Takeaway: 11.8× impressions, 14.4× clicks in 6 months. Revenue attribution via UTM: roughly €2,400/mo incremental.

Site 2: Travel photography blog (1,400 posts)

Starting state: ~18,000 photos from 6 years of travel blogging. Most alt text was “image1”, “IMG_4273”, or empty.

Intervention: bulk backfill via ImageSEO for Photography. Context-aware descriptions using post category metadata.

  • Month 1: Google Images traffic up 40%. Pinterest impressions up 70%.
  • Month 3: Google Images traffic 3.2× baseline. Google Discover started picking up hero photos.
  • Month 6: Google Images traffic 5.1× baseline. Monthly sessions from image search alone: +24,000.

Note: photography blogs see disproportionate gains because image search is their natural traffic source.

Site 3: News magazine (50 articles/day)

Starting state: 3-year-old news site, ~45,000 legacy photos, all with empty alt text. New articles got manual alt text (maybe 20% of the time).

Intervention: ImageSEO News mode — hooks into publish events, writes alt text on every new article, backfills historical archive.

  • Month 1: negligible change (Google still re-crawling archive)
  • Month 2: Google Discover impressions up 280%
  • Month 4: Google News cited in Top Stories carousels 3× more often
  • Month 6: Organic image traffic +45%, Discover traffic +180%

News is a slower-burn win because Google News re-indexing takes longer, but the Discover lift is outsized.

What these sites all had in common

  1. They automated the fix. None of them wrote alt text by hand.
  2. They backfilled the historical archive — not just new uploads.
  3. They had a clean sitemap to begin with (or ran SitemapFixer first).
  4. They measured in Google Search Console → Performance → Search type: Image.
  5. They were patient — real results showed up in month 2-3, not week 1.

What didn’t move

Not everything lifted. Things that stayed flat:

  • Text-only search traffic (expected — we only fixed images)
  • Conversion rate on existing visitors (image SEO brings NEW visitors)
  • Domain authority / backlinks

The math for your site

Rule of thumb: if your site has >500 images and <20% of them have alt text, expect a 3-10× image traffic lift within 6 months. Smaller sites see smaller gains. Image-first businesses (ecommerce, photography, news) see larger gains than text-first businesses (SaaS marketing sites, service businesses).
