Picture SEO: The 2026 Guide for WordPress and Beyond
By the ImageSEO Team. April 2026.
If you searched “picture SEO”, you probably have one of two problems:
- You uploaded a bunch of pictures and they’re not showing up on Google
- You’re starting a new site and want to do pictures right from the beginning
Either way, you’re in the right place. This is the no-fluff version of what works in 2026.
Why your pictures don’t show up on Google
The five most common reasons (in order of frequency):
- No alt text. Google can’t see the image — it only reads the alt attribute. If it’s empty or missing, you’re invisible.
- Generic file name.

- Page not crawled yet. New images take 1-7 days to appear in Google Image Search. If it’s been less than a week, just wait.
- Image not in sitemap. Make sure RankMath or Yoast is generating an image sitemap.
- Page itself doesn’t rank. If your page is on page 5 of Google for its main topic, your pictures will be too.
The 30-minute picture SEO setup
- Install RankMath (free) → enable image sitemap
- Audit your media library → fix file names + alt text on top 50 images
- Convert hero images to WebP via WP Optimize
- Submit your image sitemap to Google Search Console
- Wait 1-2 weeks, check Search Console image performance report
