Image Optimization for SEO: The Complete 2026 Playbook

Image Optimization for SEO: The Complete 2026 Playbook

By the ImageSEO Team. April 2026.

Most “image optimization for SEO” articles cover only the technical side: WebP, compression, lazy loading. That’s half the story. The other half — alt text, filenames, schema — is where the actual ranking comes from.

This is both halves, in one playbook.

Half 1: Technical optimization

  • Format: WebP for photos, AVIF where supported, SVG for icons/logos, PNG for screenshots with text. Avoid GIFs (use WebM video).
  • Compression: Hero images under 500 KB. Below-the-fold under 200 KB. Use a tool like ShortPixel or WP Optimize.
  • Dimensions: 1200px+ on the longest edge for hero, 800px for inline. Always include width and height attributes.
  • Lazy loading: Native loading="lazy" on all below-the-fold images. WordPress 5.5+ does this automatically.
  • Responsive srcset: Serve smaller images to mobile devices. WordPress handles this if you use the Media Library properly.

Half 2: Semantic optimization

  • Alt text: Specific, descriptive, under 125 chars. 30 examples here.
  • File names: Lowercase, hyphens, descriptive. Full guide here.
  • Captions: Visible text in <figcaption>. Captions get 300% more reader attention than body text.
  • ImageObject schema: JSON-LD schema with creator, license, contentUrl. This is what gets you cited in AI Overviews.
  • Surrounding text: The paragraph above and below the image should mention the same subject as the alt text. Semantic context multiplies ranking confidence.

The 80/20 of image optimization for SEO

If you only do 3 things: (1) write descriptive alt text on every image, (2) convert hero images to WebP, (3) add ImageObject schema. That’s 80% of the impact for 20% of the work.

ImageSEO automates all three for WordPress sites. Free plan available.
